It was a sunny day when the fate of a dog carrying 9 Pounds of tangled Fur and 6-inch Nails completely changed for good.

It all started when the rescuers at the Nebraska Humane Society (NHS) first laid their eyes on a dog later named Ellie Mae.

At first, they didn’t believe what they saw as Ellie Mae didn’t actually look like a dog.

They all thought it was just a motionless heap of tangled, filthy fur, not until the pile moved.

It was later discovered that beneath the tangled fur was a small, fragile dog that had been neglected for years.

After barely recognizing her under the nearly 9lbs of matted hair. It was a heartbreaking sight accomplished with a silent testimony to the suffering she had endured.

The Pain Beneath the Fur

After the rescuers picked her up, they went straight for her health assessment only to discover that Ellie Mae’s ordeal wasn’t just cosmetic; it was a full-blown health crisis.

They uncovered more layers of suffering such as:

• Her fur was so tightly matted that feces were trapped against her skin.
• Her nails had grown an unbelievable six inches, and it is also curling into her paws, which must have been very painful for her.
• She also showed signs of muscle atrophy, arthritis, and even a hernia.

This is where her tragic story becomes clear: her own had passed away, and she has been left alone with no one to care for her.

Which places her in a slow and silent deterioration.

A Life-Saving Transformation

After the NHS Rescue team learned about her tragic story and pain, they knew they had to act fast to save her life.

Carefully, they began the painstaking process of removing the suffocating matting that had imprisoned Ellie Mae for years.

For as long as 5 hours, they kept untangling, and shaving away the weight of her past.

After shaving and cleaning up, what they saw was a beautiful little dog beneath all the neglect.

The dog turns out to be Shih Tzu, who is ready to start her life all over again. Meaning she is now free for the first time after years of suffering.

A New Beginning

Ellie Mae’s transformation didn’t end there. Just after two weeks of veterinary care, she blossomed into a happy, playful pup. This made her story spread quickly and captured the hearts of various people worldwide.  

Then came the moment everyone had hoped for, Ellie Mae found her forever home.
